Shark Fishing for the First Time

Show Date: April 2, 2022

Location: Florida Keys

This is a bucket-list trip for us as we head to southern Florida to target sharks. Sam Root with Savage Gear Americas lives in Florida, and fishing sharks is pretty routine.  The main hurdle is finding, and then catching the bait, which is done by netting.  Sam tells us that catching the bait is the hard part, and catching the sharks is the fun part.  Fun is an understatement, because these fish put up a fight live I have never experienced - what a rush!

Sam isn’t a guide, but if you want more info, contact Alan Sherman at GetEmSportfishing.com

Episode 15

Spring Walleye and Crappies

Show Date: April 9th, 2022

Locations: Fox River, Green Bay, Wisconsin

Okauchee Lake, Waukesha County, Wisconsin

We’re back from Florida, and are in the spring air of Wisconsin! This year, that air is cold and damp, and we are heading out on the Fox River to target walleyes.  The cold-front doesn't do us any favors, and we struggle to get a pattern going, only catching sporadic walleyes.

We catch somewhat of a break when we head out for crappies with Matty B, with a clear morning sky, and fish that are biting right away.  Clouds move in in the afternoon, and when it starts to rain late afternoon, we call it quits, and head to shore having caught (and released) over 50 fish.

Episode 16

Green Bay Walleye Run

Show Date: April 16th, 2022

Location: Bay of Green Bay; Oconto, Wisconsin

This week we’re on the west side of the Bay of Green Bay chasing walleyes.  This bite is no secret, and anglers from all around head to the Marinette, Peshtigo, or Oconto areas each spring to chase a personal record walleye.  Jumbo female fish are swimming upstream to lay their eggs, and anglers crowd the areas around river mouths to catch and release these fish while they are in transit.

This year, the lure of choice seems to be the hair jig, although we had success with Kalin’s Jerk Minnows, as well as the Livingston Pro Ripper.

Episode 17

Jet Boating Up River

Show Date: April 23rd, 2022

Location: Bay of Green Bay, West Side Tributaries

This week we’re doing something very unique that we’ve never done before. After a disappointing 2 days on the Mississippi due to very poor weather, we’re fishing the last possible day we can to film a show for this week.

The weather being what it was going to be, very high winds, we knew that we would need to be fishing on a river, so we called an old friend who recently got a new tunnel hull boat with a jet drive outboard.  Jeff Wallace is a good buddy that we have missed fishing with, and he absolutely saved our butts this week!  The special thing about a boat like Jeffs, is that it can get through spots that would not be possible with a traditional outboard, which means spots that are much less pressured. Rob Manthei also made the trip to help us out.

Lures of choice during our trip are Livingston Jerkmasters, or the Kalin’s Jerk Minnow.  We set up on a spot, and do a controlled drift. We had a great day, huge thanks to Jeff and Rob for putting this trip together so quickly!

Episode 18

The Frigid Spring Continues

Show Date: April 30th, 2022

Location: Mississippi River, Red Wing, Minnesota

Guide: Jeremiah Luhmann [651-380-7278 | luhmannsriverguiding.com]

The wind, cold, and snow still haven’t stopped, and we’re wondering if this harsh weather is worse for the fish or the fisherman.

Jeremiah Luhmann is our man in the Red Wing area, and he has had a very up-and-down spring, needing to cancel several trips due to terrible weather and fishing conditions.  He’s got lots of spots, and a bunch of good techniques to get the walleyes to trigger.  What we find during our trip, is pulling plastics into the current is the most effective, although it is a much more challenging technique than you might think.  We struggle to get a consistent bite, although things do pick up when the sun finally does decide to show up.  The delayed spring warming trend means the best bite is yet to come.
