We’re back in Door County for the May walleye bite! This time of year isn’t about numbers of fish, it’s about looking for big fish.  The bite can be highly dependent on weather, but there are spots to fish for just about any situation.  Getting out on the water with Wacky Walleye Guide Service has it’s definite advantages, because the whole team works together to find fish.

Spring Crappies & Bass

Location: Waukesha County, Wisconsin

We’re out on an absolutely beautiful May day with our buddy Matty B, looking for bass at first, then moving on to crappies. Throwing plastics and pork for bass along shorelines.  An advantage to fishing this time of year is that you can use a bunch of different presentations, both slow moving, as well as fast moving baits will work. When we move on to crappies, the star of the show is a crappie scrub under a rocket bobber, just like we’ve always used.  The scrub is very effective, as well as efficient, because you can cast out quickly after a catch, without having to re-bait your hook.

Back in the Dells with Big Dave

We’re delighted to be back fishing with our longtime friend, Big Dave Ehardt.  The water levels, and the air temps have been up and down quite a bit this spring, which is why the fish are spread out this year.  Cold temps over night seem to quell the bite in the morning, but as the day goes on, and the water warms up, the fish start to bite.  We fish mostly shorelines for bass, but catch a few walleyes that are mixed in, using minnows and plastics.  Changing it up later on to target whitebass, which show the diverse population of the river, and the many options anglers have.

Chasing Walleyes with Pete & Tex

Show Date: May 22nd, 2021

Location: Hayward, Wisconsin

This week we’re in Hayward Wisconsin with Pete Maina, the muskie guru, and his dad Tex.  Pete and Tex always like to get out in the spring to target walleye, and we always try to get an invite.  What we like about this trip is that we have an opportunity to target other species if the walleyes don’t  cooperate, like bass, pike, and crappies.  

Pete is casting a Livingston lure, Tex is using live bait, and John is usling Kalin’s plastics.  Having every angler throw something different early in the year is a great way to find out what is working best for the day.

Fishing with the Stars

We’re thrilled to be back in St. Germain for the annual “Fishing with the Stars” event, especially after it had to be canceled last year.  The turnout this year was the best it’s ever been, and the prizes were also top-notch thanks to some wonderful sponsors.  

As is the case each year, contestants fish the tournament, and receive prizes based on how they place in each species category.  After all the prizes are awarded, tickets are picked to see who will join us for a day of fishing while we film a show.  Three great kids ended up aboard with us, Colton, Easton, Claton; and they were determined fishermen, even though the fishing conditions weren’t ideal.
