We’re back on the Mississippi, just like we planned it! Captain Vince, and Captain Caleb invited us back to target jumbo perch, but this time on open water.
Just as we had explained during our last ice fishing trip, we are back looking for perch, and our day was not a disappointment. Casting jigs with, crawlers, red worms, & plastics all caught fish. We were in a spot that had perch on one side of the boat, and walleye on the other! There are so many spots just like the one we were on, along with “fishing floats” in key locations, all down the river, so just about any angler can get out and fish.
This week we experience temperatures usually associated with July or August, and it’s just the beginning of May!
With air temps reaching the 80’s, the water is warming up quickly, and many of the walleyes that we’re targeting are most likely busy spawning. Captain Jeremiah Luhmann knows these waters well, and has a lot of spots, and a lot of different presentations to try. Jeremiah tells us that this is the time of the year for anglers to catch a huge walleye, as there are pre-spawn monsters swimming in these waters.

Lake Erie Walleyes
Show Date: April 17th, 2021
Location: Lake Erie, Port Clinton, Ohio
Guide: Charter Captain Mike Patterson [419-308-6925 | mikessportfishing.com]
This week we are finally able to get to Lake Erie with Charter Captain Mike Patterson! The weather has been up-and-down over the last few weeks, and we have been trying to get something together, and it worked out this week. We brought a few special guests too, Tom and his buddy Todd.
We did have some wind that was supposed to die down towards the end of day one, but actually picked up, driving us off the lake. Even though we had winds in the 30-40mph range, Mike was still able to put us on a very good drift using a drift sock.
Day two brought us much calmer waters, so we were out to troll for the big ones that Lake Erie is well known for. Trolling at a slow enough pace to cast was a nice bonus, and we ended up catching more fish casting than trolling.
Any trip to Lake Erie is a treat, as long as you can get out on the lake. When you have a good captain like Mike, you know he’ll do his best to put you on fish safely.
Episode 17
Spring Vilas County Crappies
Show Date: April 24th, 2021
Location: Vilas County, Wisconsin
Guide: Pro Guide Rob Manthei [715-477-2042 | robmanthei.com]
We headed to the northwoods of Wisconsin to spend a day on the water with our longtime friend and guide Rob Manthei, who has the crappie bite dialed in. Rob tells us that the best time to target crappies on these lakes is as soon as the ice is gone. We happen to be here during a cold front, but we target the north end of the lake as usual, and find fish. Exclusively using Kalin’s plastics like the crappie scrub, and never live bait, is the key to our success. Not having to constantly re-bait our hooks keeps us on the fish longer.
Despite the tough conditions, it’s always a good time when you're in the Wisconsin northwoods!
