Fall is a great time of year to head north to see the change of the season, and of course to head out on the water. Along with Blake, we’re bringing along Matt Bichanich to fish a few lakes we’ve never been on.
To get a sense of what’s going on this time of year, we first head out with friend and pro guide Rob Manthei to talk fall fishing, and see whats working right now. We are targeting walleye, bass, and pike. Rob spends a lot of time fishing muskie this time of year, but he’s always on the lookout for schooling fish. Since we’re targeting walleye, Rob has a bunch of good spots that he thinks will produce fish. Live bait seems to be the best, but the Kalin’s are working too. What works seems to change day-to-day with the changing water temps. Our buddy Henry Abbott is up by Rob every weekend this time of year, so he joins us for this part of the trip as well, so we’ve got a good crew filling out our Recon!
As part of our exploration, we try out a small lake that we’ve never been to in the Land O’ Lakes area. Matt guides us here, and suggests looking for weeks, and break-lines - this is where a locator like the Humminbird are crucial. Baitfish hide in vegetation, and wherever there are baitfish, there are predator fish.
