Mississippi Grab Bag

We’re back on the Mississippi River, this time with guide Vince Moldenhauer to explore the diversity of the fishery, and catch just about every species that swims in this river. 

We’ve got a day and a half to fish, and for the first day we arrive in the afternoon, and Vince takes us to a classic spot on this river, a dam. Casting hair jigs & Kastmasters is what works, and we catch a lot of jumbo white bass, as well as a few smallmouth bass. 

On day 2 the sun is out, and we’re keen to get on some panfish. Vince puts us on a great crappie bite, that is topped off with a few gigantic perch towards the end of the day.

Spring in Hayward

We love our annual tradition of heading to the Hayward area just after opener to get out on the water with Pete Maina, and his Dad Tex.  Pete grew up guiding a lot of water in this area, and he has no shortage of spots to try.  We have some crummy weather, but Pete is undeterred and we get on some beautiful northwoods walleyes, as well as a few bonus fish.

Sunny Vilas County

It’s just after the opener, and we’ve got a bit of a cold-front rolling over us as we head out on the water in Vilas County with guide Rob Manthei. Rob tells us that the past week the weather has been up and down, and the fishing has been off and on; and the weather and fishing aren't quite connected yet. We’ve got a special guest, Chris MacGillis, who has loved fishing in this area since he was a boy. We use a mix of plastics, but mostly a live minnow is what catches the most fish during our time on the water.

Northwoods Road Trip

This week we headed back up to Hayward to see if Pete and Tex wanted to get out on the water again, this time we’re looking to target crappies as well as anything else that bites.  


On the way home we pop in with Rob throwing a few casts at some nice bass that have been starting to bite.
